Or how to squeeze flowers into those teeny-weenie drops

I have always been drawn to nature and wildlife photography. I love taking my camera way up north to capture images of seldom-seen animals and exotic scenery. Unfortunately, we can’t always plan distant adventures to shoot photographs of moose and northern lights. But we can train our eyes to find the unexpected beauty in our own backyards.

My fascination (some might call it an obsession) with water drops began when I bought a Nikon D200 last summer. Sadly, the lens I wanted was out of stock. There was no way I was going to just look at my camera body while I waited, so I picked up a Nikkor 60mm macro. Through that lens I discovered worlds of complexity hidden within the simplest tiny drops of water.

I’m often asked if the images inside the water drops are real or the product of Photoshop. Let me assure you they are real, and anyone can find them if they know how to look. Simple physics produces these tiny, beautiful and common images. Water is cohesive, it naturally bonds together in the shape of a sphere, and in that shape it functions as a miniature lens that will refract nearby objects. Using that organic lens as seen through your technological lens, will allow you to explore those tiny, complex worlds.

The water drop photos on my stream have been the result of an evolutional process. My most viewed, most faved and most interesting photo (according to flickr) was taken almost by luck, lying flat on my belly using a Diet Coke can as tripod. But after a great deal of trial and error, I’ve come up with a few simple, consistent steps for more easily creating a water drop photograph.

1. Focus: No, that’s not a typo; focus is listed twice, and for a very good reason. It’s necessary to consider the focus of the water drop itself as well as the focus of the subject displayed within the drop. My initial concern is the water drop itself and the plant on which the drop is located. I like to set my camera to aperture priority to control the depth of field. The trick is to have enough depth of field so the drop and the plant (and maybe some nearby drops) are all in focus, while leaving the background sufficiently blurred so it doesn’t compete for attention. I generally use f8 to f10 but I’ll sometimes stop down to f18 if the background does not need as much blur. I also find I get a sharper focus by backing away just a little and cropping the photo, rather than getting as close as possible in an attempt to get maximum magnification.

2. Focus: As seen in the example above, the water drop is in focus as is the image of the flower seen through the water drop, but the flower itself is not in focus. That effect is achieved not by adjusting the camera, but by relying on the water drop to act as a fixed focal lens. In other words, instead of adjusting the camera I adjust the object I want to appear within the water drop. I simply move it back or forward until I’ve found the clarity of focus I want. Some photos look better with blurred refractions. For the greatest clarity I’ve found the object should be 3-4 inches behind the water drop. This, of course, may vary if using a different macro lens. Be sure to experiment.

3. Composition: Obviously, the guidelines for good composition apply to water drop photographs. Attention should be given to the Rule of Thirds, to simplicity, to the geometry within the frame, and to all the usual elements of visual composition. It’s important to remember, though, when photographing water drops that the very shape of the drop influences compositional decisions. Since the lens of the water drop is spherical (or nearly so), slight adjustments in the camera position…left, right, up, down…can have a radical effect on what is seen within the drop. Again, experiment.

4. Background: If you’re working from nature, your control over the background is necessarily limited. You have to work with what you’ve got. As mentioned earlier, the unique qualities of the organic lens formed by a drop of water allows you to make minor adjustments in the camera position that will have a profound effect on what’s seen within the drop. With a few simple props, you can gain better control over the background. For example, I often rely on a large sheet of insulation, which is bright blue on one side. I originally used it to block the wind, but noticed that even on the dreariest of days it can mimic a perfect azure sky.

Other Considerations: Almost every time I set out to take photographs of water drops, I learned something new. There was always some new factor to consider. I learned, for example, I could get bigger, more cohesive and more interesting drops on humid days. I discovered that even the slightest wind could have disastrous effects on macro focusing, as well as on the water drops themselves. I found that very slightly adjusting the exposure (-0.3EV to –0.7EV) would compensate for the natural sheen of the surface of the water drop, keeping it from being somewhat burnt out. Most important, I had to teach myself to remember that because a water drop acts as an organic lens, it presents everything upside down and in reverse (just like a pinhole camera or a large format camera).

So now I’m one of the few people who looks forward to really still, stifling, humid days. And even though my beautiful Nikkor 18-200mm has arrived, I still have my macro on more than half the time. Water drop photos are not only real, but also addicting to try to master.

That’s it. That’s how it’s done. It’s as simple as learning how chess pieces move, and just as complex as a game of chess. Good luck and think small.

Dr. Clelia Mosher – 1892

Dr. Clelia Mosher (1863 – 1940) was a brilliant and extraordinary woman who made debunking the claims of Victorian medicine regarding the frailty of the female body her life’s work. As a young woman she was forced to face these stereotypes head on when her father forbade her to attend college due to her sickly childhood. In order to encourage her to stay at home, he built a sort of "educational laboratory" in their family greenhouse. He encouraged her to learn botany and horticulture in this sheltered environment. Rather than simply accepting his plans for her, Clelia spent the next few years studying and running a successful business as a florist.

After eight years of working, she announced to her rather startled parents that she had saved enough money to put herself through school whether they approved or not. She had some initial difficulty adjusting to college, but despite her father’s dire predictions, she did not succumb to a mental or physical collapse. She did begin to realize how wrong "modern" medicine was about what women were capable of. If she could prove her own father, an esteemed physician, wrong maybe there were other cases where medical science was distorted in it’s judgement of the "weaker" sex.

For her Master’s thesis in 1894 she published a physiological study disproving the idea that women and men breathe differently. The prevailing view among doctors at the time was that men breathed downwards with the diaphragm (think belly breathing as advocated by most singing teachers) while women breathed upwards with the chest due to the physiological demands of pregnancy. After studying numerous college co-eds and young, unmarried mothers from a local shelter she determined, rather unsurprisingly to our modern eyes, that women were perfectly capable of breathing downwards with their diaphragms when they weren’t tightly laced into constrictive corsets!

After this triumph of empirical science over baseless speculation, Mosher was inspired to begin studying one of the more fundamental female ills of her day, menstruation. Most women in the 1890’s expected to be virtually incapacitated during their monthly menstrual period, which led to the general conception that menstruation made women unsuitable for many sorts of jobs or schooling requiring regular attendance. Mosher felt sure that, just as with the breathing issue, there must be other forces at work causing this discomfort. She hoped that such forces could be mitigated or removed entirely once they were identified.

The vast pool of data that Mosher gathered on healthy menstruating women prompted her to enter medical school in 1896 seeking the skills and knowledge she would need to analyze it. At least one older, established male physician tried to pressure her into giving up her data him for study, but she stood her ground, refusing to relinquish it. She was finally able to return her analysis in 1910. She found that women were uncomfortable during menstruation not because of a flaw in their basic physiology but because, in essence, they dressed impractically, did not exercise well, chose their diets poorly, and expected to be in pain. These findings started her life long campaign to encourage women to focus on the health of their bodies instead of sacrificing them on the altar of fashion.

She went on to prove that the physical strength of women was no less, when developed, then that of men. She based these findings on observations she recorded during her time working in Paris during the Great War. After she returned to the States she published a book refuting the commonly held fear that menopause would lead women to dysfunction of even insanity.

Perhaps her most famous work is one that was not published in her lifetime. In 1892, as a junior in college, she was invited to speak to the Mothers Club on the topic of "marital relations." Being unmarried and having no practical experience with romance, she turned to her scientific principals. She began gathering data from real women rather than succumbing to speculation or resorting to popular "marriage manuals" written by men. Mosher developed a nine-page set of survey questions about marriage and sex and gave it to the members of the Mothers Club. She based her talk on their responses. The experience inspired her to continue studying this highly taboo subject.

Over the next 30 years she administered her survey to 47 women. The sampling was decidedly non-random and highly biased towards educated women married to college graduates, but it still presents the only existing scientific study of the intimate lives of Victorian women. Her results are often considered remarkable because they present a far more honest and enlightened view of these women’s sexuality than what we would consider consistent with the prevailing "repressive" ideals of their times. Historians can not simply conclude that all right thinking Victorian women were "timid, frigid creatures simply doing their duty to their husbands" when faced with these candid responses.

The majority of the women surveyed had worked before marriage, mostly as teachers, though the sample included a librarian, an accountant, and a bookbinder. A small minority claimed to have known a great deal about sex before their marriage, attributing their knowledge to books, courses, friends, and relatives. The majority claimed to have known very little, with one woman even saying: “I was so innocent of the matter that until I was 18, I did not know the origin of babies.” 80% of the women who were willing to answer admitted that they felt desire for sexual intercourse. 72% indicated that they experienced an orgasm during sex but several reported frustration with their "slow" reactions. One woman complained, “When no orgasm, takes days to recover” and another felt it was a more practical problem in that "Men have not been properly trained."

Many of the women frankly disclosed their feelings on the "true purpose of intercourse," a question which they would have been less willing to answer for a man. Many of the women did feel that sex was meant for both reproduction and pleasure, with only a small minority indicating that only men required it or that it should be used only for procreation. Along with the younger women of childbearing age, several postmenopausal women confirmed that they both frequently had and enjoyed sex. One woman rather eloquently explained: “Even if there are no children, men love their wives more if they continue this relation, and the highest devotion is based upon it, a very beautiful thing, and I am glad nature gave it to us.”

The winter tyre is designed to give better grip on the road during lower temperatures and keep you safer. The number of accidents in winter is more than in summer because people do not know that a summer tyre (in finnish Kesärengas) must not be used in winter.

The program contains tips to help individuals identify foods that trigger overeating and permanently eliminate such foods from their diet.

 

Stage Four

 

At stage four, also called the reveal stage, one must simply embrace the changes learned in the first three stages and enjoy his or her new weight. 

 

Additional Recommendations

 

30-60 minutes of exercise each day is encouraged during all four stages of the diet plan, and Bauer recommends that such exercise should include both aerobic activity and resistance training. Healthy snacking is also an integral part of the diet plan, and participants are encouraged to stock up on healthy snacks such as fresh vegetables and fruit, along with moderate amounts of low fat yogurt and healthy nuts. Bauer also tells dieters to plan and shop for healthy foods in advance in order to avoid turning to convenience products or processed foods when pressed for time.
